Which Japanese holdout surrendered on Guam in 1972, nearly 28 years after World War II ended?

The story behind the answer

Shōichi Yokoi surrendered on Guam in 1972, nearly 28 years after World War II ended.

Yokoi was a Japanese Army sergeant who hid in the jungles of Guam after the island was recaptured by American forces in 1944. He and two other soldiers remained concealed for years, living in difficult conditions and avoiding contact with local residents. The other two men died before Yokoi was discovered.

Two Guam hunters found Yokoi on January 24, 1972. He initially resisted, but they brought him out safely and took him to authorities. Yokoi returned to Japan in February 1972 and became a symbol of the extreme isolation experienced by some Japanese soldiers who did not learn that the war had ended.

Yokoi is often confused with Hiroo Onoda, who surrendered in the Philippines in 1974, and Teruo Nakamura, who was found in Indonesia in 1974.
