Which Japanese general surrendered in the Philippines on 2 September 1945?

The story behind the answer

Tomoyuki Yamashita surrendered in the Philippines on 2 September 1945.

Yamashita, commander of Japanese forces in the Philippines, formally surrendered to Allied forces in Kiangan, Ifugao, on the same date that Japan signed its national surrender aboard USS Missouri. His surrender was a regional act that followed the broader capitulation of Japan.

Yamashita had gained the nickname “The Tiger of Malaya” after leading the Japanese conquest of Malaya and Singapore in 1941–42. In the Philippines, however, Japanese forces continued fighting in difficult terrain even after Tokyo announced its surrender.

He is often confused with Yoshijiro Umezu, who signed the national instrument for Imperial Japanese General Headquarters in Tokyo Bay. Yamashita’s separate surrender explains why Philippine commemorations may use 2 or 3 September and refer specifically to the surrender of General Yamashita.
