Which Japanese general signed the surrender of Japanese forces in China at Nanjing?
Answer
Yasuji Okamura
Answer
Yasuji Okamura
General Yasuji Okamura signed the surrender of Japanese forces in China at Nanjing.
The ceremony took place on September 9, 1945, one week after the formal surrender aboard USS Missouri. Okamura signed for the Japanese China Expeditionary Army at the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing. General He Yingqin accepted the surrender for the Republic of China and the Allied powers.
The Nanjing ceremony was a regional surrender, not a replacement for the September 2 ceremony that ended the war internationally. It dealt specifically with Japanese forces in China and followed orders issued by General Douglas MacArthur concerning the areas assigned to Chiang Kai-shek’s government.
The date was deliberately chosen as the ninth day of the ninth month. In Chinese, the number nine is associated with ideas of longevity, so the date carried a symbolic hope that the peace would last. The ceremony lasted about 15 minutes and used a document written in both Japanese and Chinese.
