Which Japanese general signed the Southeast Asian surrender document in Singapore in 1945?
Answer
Seishirō Itagaki
Answer
Seishirō Itagaki
Seishirō Itagaki signed the Southeast Asian surrender document in Singapore in 1945.
Itagaki represented the Japanese forces at the September 12 ceremony in Singapore’s Municipal Building. He signed the document formally surrendering Japanese forces in Southeast Asia to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Supreme Allied Commander of South East Asia Command.
Field Marshal Hisaichi Terauchi was the commander of the Japanese Southern Army Group, but illness prevented him from attending personally. Itagaki therefore signed on his behalf. The distinction explains why both names appear in accounts of the Singapore surrender.
The Singapore ceremony followed the September 2 signing aboard USS Missouri but was not a duplicate of the same document in the same setting. It completed the surrender process for Japanese forces across the Southeast Asian command. Afterward, British military administration was established in Singapore, while Japanese troops remained involved in security and logistical duties until Allied arrangements were implemented.
