Which Japanese commander surrendered Singapore’s forces to Lord Mountbatten in September 1945?
Answer
Seishirō Itagaki
Answer
Seishirō Itagaki
Seishirō Itagaki surrendered Singapore’s forces to Lord Mountbatten in September 1945.
The formal ceremony took place at Singapore’s Municipal Building on September 12, 1945. Itagaki surrendered Japanese forces in Southeast Asia on behalf of Field Marshal Hisaichi Terauchi, commander of Japan’s Southern Army Group. Lord Louis Mountbatten accepted the surrender as Supreme Allied Commander of Southeast Asia Command.
The ceremony followed Japan’s wider surrender announcement and the formal signing aboard USS Missouri. It was a regional surrender, not a separate end to the entire war. Japanese forces in Singapore and Malaya remained under local command until Allied representatives arrived to receive them.
Itagaki is sometimes confused with General Tomoyuki Yamashita, who had commanded Japanese forces during the conquest of Malaya and Singapore in 1942. Yamashita had been transferred away from Singapore before the 1945 surrender. Itagaki later returned to Japan, where he was tried and executed as a war criminal in 1946.
