Which Japanese commander surrendered at Kiangan in the Philippines on 2 September 1945?

The story behind the answer

General Tomoyuki Yamashita surrendered at Kiangan in the Philippines on 2 September 1945.

Yamashita commanded Japanese forces in the Philippines during the final stage of the Pacific War. He surrendered to Philippine and American forces in Kiangan, in the mountain province of Ifugao, on the same day that Japan’s representatives signed the formal surrender aboard USS Missouri.

His surrender was a regional capitulation rather than the signing that ended Japan’s war with the Allied powers. Local Japanese forces had continued fighting after Tokyo accepted the surrender terms, and commanders in distant theaters had to receive orders and arrange their own formal ceremonies.

Yamashita had earlier captured Singapore in February 1942, earning the nickname “Tiger of Malaya.” After the war, an American military commission tried him for command responsibility, and he was executed in Manila in 1946.
