Hiroshima was targeted by the first atomic bomb used in warfare on August 6, 1945.
The United States Army Air Forces dropped the uranium bomb Little Boy from the B-29 bomber Enola Gay. The explosion occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m. local time and devastated much of Hiroshima, a major military and industrial center in southwestern Japan.
Three days later, the United States dropped the plutonium bomb Fat Man on Nagasaki. The Soviet Union also declared war on Japan on August 8, and Soviet forces invaded Japanese-held territory beginning August 9. These events intensified pressure on Japan’s leaders to end the war.
Hirohito’s surrender announcement followed on August 15, although the formal surrender document was not signed until September 2. Hiroshima is therefore part of the immediate sequence leading to Japan’s surrender, but it was not itself the site of the surrender ceremony.
