Which Japanese city was targeted by the atomic bomb called Fat Man in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Nagasaki was the Japanese city targeted by the atomic bomb called Fat Man in 1945.

The United States dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, three days after the Hiroshima bombing. The plutonium implosion bomb was carried by the B-29 bomber Bockscar and detonated at approximately 11:02 a.m. local time.

Nagasaki was not the mission’s first-choice target. Kokura had been designated as the primary target, but clouds, smoke, and poor visibility prevented the crew from making the required visual bombing run. Bockscar therefore proceeded to Nagasaki, the secondary target.

The city’s hills confined some of the blast effects compared with the flatter terrain of Hiroshima. Fat Man nevertheless destroyed large parts of the Urakami district and caused enormous loss of life. The bombing occurred on the same day that Soviet forces began their offensive against Japan in Manchuria.
