Which Japanese city was struck by the second atomic bomb, code-named Fat Man, in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Nagasaki was struck by the second atomic bomb, code-named Fat Man, in 1945.

The United States dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, three days after the uranium bomb Little Boy was used against Hiroshima. Fat Man was an implosion-type plutonium weapon, while Little Boy used a different gun-type design based on uranium-235.

The B-29 bomber Bockscar carried Fat Man. Its primary target was Kokura Arsenal, but cloud and smoke obscured Kokura, so the crew proceeded to the secondary target, Nagasaki. The bomb detonated over the Urakami Valley, an industrial area of the city.

Nagasaki was the second city attacked with a nuclear weapon in warfare. The bombings, combined with the Soviet entry into the war, shaped Japan’s surrender decision. The formal surrender ceremony still occurred later, on 2 September 1945, aboard USS Missouri.
