Which Japanese city was hit by the first wartime atomic bomb on 6 August 1945?

The story behind the answer

Hiroshima was hit by the first wartime atomic bomb on 6 August 1945.

The United States Army Air Forces dropped the uranium bomb Little Boy from the B-29 bomber Enola Gay. The detonation occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m. local time, devastating much of Hiroshima and killing or fatally injuring many people immediately and in the following months.

Hiroshima was a military headquarters, communications center, and industrial city. Its relatively intact condition before the attack also made it a significant target for assessing the bomb's effects. The bombing became a major factor in the final crisis of Japan's wartime government.

Three days later, the United States dropped the plutonium bomb Fat Man on Nagasaki. The Soviet Union also entered the war against Japan on 9 August. Japan announced its acceptance of the Allied terms on 15 August, although the formal surrender was not signed until 2 September.
