Toei Subway is one of Tokyo’s two principal subway systems, alongside Tokyo Metro. It is operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, an agency of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and its lines mainly run through Tokyo’s 23 special wards. The network connects major business, shopping and residential districts across the capital.

The system began operation in 1960 with the Asakusa Line. It now consists of four lines: Asakusa, Mita, Shinjuku and Ōedo. Together they form a separate network from Tokyo Metro, although the two systems are closely integrated through shared station numbering, coordinated maps and convenient transfers.

The word “Toei” means “metropolitan-operated,” distinguishing this system from Tokyo Metro. Travellers sometimes describe all of Tokyo’s underground railways simply as the Tokyo subway, but that umbrella term covers two separate operators. Toei’s lines also use different track gauges, partly because several provide through services onto private railway networks beyond central Tokyo.
