The CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda since 2012. It replaced the Mazda Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7, becoming the first Mazda model to combine the company’s Kodo design language with its Skyactiv engineering program.

The production CX-5 debuted after concept versions appeared in 2011, and Japanese production began at Mazda’s Ujina plant near Hiroshima. Its engines, transmissions and lightweight platform were designed to balance performance with fuel economy. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive have both been offered, depending on market and trim.

A common mix-up is confusing Mazda with Toyota, Honda or Nissan, all of which make competing SUVs. The CX-5 remains a Mazda model even when it is built outside Japan. Since 2014, it has generally been Mazda’s best-selling vehicle worldwide; in 2019, global sales reached 444,262 units.
