Which Japanese automaker produced the Toyota 2000GT?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese automaker that produced the Toyota 2000GT was Toyota.

Toyota developed the 2000GT as a halo sports car to demonstrate that Japan could build a world-class grand tourer. Yamaha Motor helped engineer and assemble the car, but Toyota was the automaker and brand responsible for producing and marketing it. The first prototype appeared in 1965, and production cars followed in 1967.

The sleek two-seat coupe used a 2.0-liter straight-six engine derived from Toyota’s Crown engine family. Yamaha developed the double-overhead-cam cylinder head and contributed important engineering expertise. The result was a sophisticated car with independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and carefully balanced handling.

Only 337 regular-production examples were built between 1967 and 1970, which helped make the model highly prized by collectors. Yamaha’s role sometimes causes confusion, because its factory assembled the cars and its engineers shaped the engine. Mazda, Nissan, and Honda were also Japanese automakers, but none produced the Toyota-badged 2000GT.
