Which Italian town is considered to make the world's best balsamic vinegar?

The story behind the answer

The Italian town considered the home of the world’s finest balsamic vinegar is Modena.

Modena, in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is famous for traditional balsamic vinegar, or Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena. This intensely flavored vinegar is made from cooked grape must and matured in wooden barrels, where evaporation and gradual concentration create its dark color, syrupy texture, and sweet-tart flavor.

A common mix-up is treating all supermarket “balsamic vinegar” as the same product. Traditional balsamic vinegar is protected by a PDO designation and must be aged for at least 12 years; the extra-old version is aged for at least 25 years. Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, a broader PGI product, may include wine vinegar and has different production and aging requirements.

The nearby city of Reggio Emilia also produces a respected traditional balsamic vinegar, so Modena is not the only legitimate answer in the region. However, when a quiz asks for the Italian town most associated with the world’s best balsamic vinegar, Modena is the standard canonical answer.
