Which Italian island is Saint Lucia associated with?
Answer
Sicily
Answer
Sicily
Saint Lucia is associated with Sicily, the Italian island where she was traditionally born and martyred. She is especially connected with Syracuse, or Siracusa, on Sicily’s southeastern coast.
According to Christian tradition, Lucy lived during the Roman persecution of Christians and died in Syracuse around the early fourth century. Her feast day is December 13, and Syracuse remains an important center of her veneration. A silver statue containing her relics is traditionally carried through the city during the annual celebration.
Sicily is sometimes confused with the independent Caribbean country of Saint Lucia, whose name also honors the saint. The country is not an Italian island. Nor are Malta, Corsica, or Sardinia the traditional homeland associated with Saint Lucy. In the wider European Lucia tradition, Sicily also appears in songs and stories describing the saint’s origins.
