Which Italian city was Dante Alighieri from?

The story behind the answer

Dante Alighieri was from Florence, the Tuscan city where he was born and grew up. His identity as a Florentine remained central to his life and writing, even after political conflict forced him into exile.

Dante was born into a Florentine family connected with the city's Guelph political faction. He studied philosophy, theology, language, and poetry, and became involved in Florence's intense civic politics. He also served in public office, including as one of the city's governing priors in 1300.

His relationship with Florence later became bitter. Factional struggles between the Black and White Guelphs led to Dante's exile in 1302. He never returned, despite repeated hopes and negotiations, and spent the rest of his life moving among courts and cities in northern and central Italy.

Florence nevertheless remained woven into his imagination. The Divine Comedy is written in Tuscan vernacular, especially the Florentine variety, and Dante's poetry helped establish the linguistic foundation of modern standard Italian. A common mistake is to identify Ravenna, where he died, as his hometown; Ravenna was his final refuge, not his birthplace.
