Which Italian city is home to Michelangelo's David?

The story behind the answer

The Italian city home to Michelangelo’s David is Florence.

Michelangelo carved the monumental marble statue between 1501 and 1504 during the Italian Renaissance. The sculpture depicts the biblical hero David before his confrontation with Goliath, emphasizing concentration, physical confidence, and idealized human anatomy. It is widely regarded as one of the defining masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture.

David was commissioned for Florence Cathedral and was originally intended to stand high on the building’s exterior. Because the finished statue was enormous and weighed several tons, officials decided to place it at the Palazzo della Signoria instead. There it became a symbol of the Florentine Republic’s independence and readiness to defend itself against stronger rivals.

The original statue was moved indoors in the nineteenth century to protect it from weather and pollution. It is now displayed at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence. A replica stands near the original outdoor location in Piazza della Signoria, which can lead visitors to mistake the copy for Michelangelo’s original.
