Which Italian Baroque painter is known for his ceiling fresco in the Church of Sant’Ignazio, Rome? Andrea Pozzo painted it.
Pozzo’s masterpiece is the illusionistic ceiling of the Jesuit Church of Sant’Ignazio in Rome. Painted between 1685 and 1694, it presents the Apotheosis of Saint Ignatius of Loyola within a vast architectural illusion. Painted forms appear to extend the church upward into an open heavenly space, even though the nave ceiling is flat.
Pozzo used quadratura, a Baroque technique that combines painted architecture with carefully calculated perspective. Viewers are meant to stand at a marked point in the nave, where the geometry aligns and the fictive dome and architectural structures appear most convincing. The work demonstrates how painting could transform a physical interior without constructing an actual dome.
The church’s real dome had never been completed, partly because of disputes involving the original donors. Pozzo’s painted solution transformed that limitation into a celebrated spectacle. He also decorated the apse with scenes from the lives of Saint Ignatius, Saint Francis Xavier, and Saint Francis Borgia.
Gaulli is a likely source of confusion because he created another major Jesuit masterpiece in Rome, the ceiling and interior decoration of Il Gesù. Pietro da Cortona and Caravaggio were also important Baroque painters, but neither painted Sant’Ignazio’s famous nave ceiling.
