Which Italian automaker produced the Fiat 500? Fiat produced it.
The classic Fiat 500 was an Italian city car manufactured from 1957 to 1975. Designed by Dante Giacosa, it was created as a small, affordable vehicle for postwar Europe. Its compact dimensions, low running costs and rear-mounted engine made it practical for crowded urban streets.
The car used a two-cylinder, air-cooled engine mounted at the rear and driving the rear wheels. Despite its tiny size, the 500 could carry four people and became one of Italy’s best-known cars. Fiat produced nearly 3.9 million examples, including saloon, estate and van versions.
The model is often called the “Cinquecento,” the Italian word for 500. It should not be confused with the earlier Fiat Topolino, which also carried a 500-related name, or the modern Fiat 500 launched in 2007. Abarth and Giannini also created sporty derivatives, while Steyr-Puch built an Austrian version with a different boxer engine.
