Kiribati is widely associated with the world’s first New Year’s sunrise.
Kiribati is an island country spread across the central Pacific Ocean. Its Line Islands, including Kiritimati, use UTC+14, the world’s most advanced civil time zone. As a result, those islands are among the first inhabited places to enter a new calendar day and celebrate New Year’s Day.
The association became especially prominent after Kiribati moved the International Date Line eastward around its territory in 1994–1995. The change allowed the country’s widely separated island groups to share the same calendar date, avoiding a situation in which parts of Kiribati were nearly a day apart.
The wording “first sunrise” can be imprecise: the exact earliest sunrise depends on location, season, terrain, and what is being measured. Kiritimati is better described as one of the first inhabited places to reach the new year, rather than an absolute universal winner under every definition.
