Greenland is the world’s largest island when Australia is classified as a continent.
Greenland covers about 2.17 million square kilometres and is geographically part of North America. It is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with extensive self-government.
Around 80 percent of Greenland is covered by the Greenland ice sheet, the second-largest ice body on Earth after Antarctica’s ice sheet. Most settlements are located along the ice-free coast.
Australia is larger than Greenland but is generally classified as a continent rather than an island. New Guinea is the next-largest island after Greenland under this convention.
