Which island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is famous for Whitehaven Beach?
Answer
Whitsunday Island
Answer
Whitsunday Island
Whitsunday Island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef region is famous for Whitehaven Beach. The beach is renowned for its exceptionally pale silica sand and clear coastal waters.
Whitsunday Island is the largest island in the Whitsunday group, which lies off the central Queensland coast. Most of the island is protected within Whitsunday Islands National Park, and Whitehaven Beach stretches along its eastern side. Hill Inlet, at the beach’s northern end, is known for shifting sand patterns created by tides.
Whitehaven Beach is often mistakenly associated with nearby Hamilton Island because Hamilton is a major tourist and transport base in the group. The beach itself, however, is on uninhabited Whitsunday Island. The islands sit within the broader Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, although their landscapes are largely continental rather than built entirely from coral.
