Which island group includes Tenerife and Gran Canaria?

The story behind the answer

Which island group includes Tenerife and Gran Canaria? The Canary Islands. This Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean includes both Tenerife and Gran Canaria, along with Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa.

The islands lie roughly 100 kilometres off the northwest coast of Africa and are volcanic in origin. Tenerife is the largest and most populous island, while Gran Canaria is known for its varied landscapes and is sometimes called a “continent in miniature.” Together, the islands form an autonomous community of Spain.

The archipelago is part of Macaronesia, a broader Atlantic region that also includes Madeira, the Azores, Cape Verde and the Savage Islands. That geographic relationship often causes quiz-takers to confuse the Canary Islands with Madeira or the Azores, but those are separate island groups.

Tenerife contains Teide National Park, whose volcanic Mount Teide reaches 3,715 metres, the highest point in Spain. The islands’ strategic position has long connected Europe, Africa and the Americas, while their mild climate has made them major tourism destinations.
