Which Islamic month comes immediately after Ramadan?

Shawwal is the Islamic month that comes immediately after Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, making Shawwal its tenth. The sequence is determined by the Islamic calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar: Sha'ban precedes Ramadan, Shawwal follows it, and Dhu al-Qa'da comes next.

The first day of Shawwal is Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of Ramadan fasting. Fasting is prohibited on that first day, when Muslims commonly attend a special prayer, give charitable alms known as zakat al-fitr, and gather for meals and visits. Because Islamic months begin with the sighting or establishment of a new crescent, Shawwal lasts either 29 or 30 days.

Some Muslims observe six optional fasts during Shawwal, beginning after Eid al-Fitr. A well-known hadith describes Ramadan fasting followed by six days in Shawwal as carrying the reward of fasting for a full year. These voluntary fasts should not be confused with the obligatory Ramadan fast, and scholarly views differ over whether the six days should be consecutive.
