Which is the only country that borders both France and Spain?

The story behind the answer

Andorra is the only country that borders both France and Spain.

Andorra is a small, landlocked state in the eastern Pyrenees, situated between France to the north and Spain to the south. Its territory covers about 468 square kilometres, making it one of Europe’s smallest countries. The capital is Andorra la Vella, one of the highest national capitals in Europe.

The country’s political system is a parliamentary co-principality. Its two heads of state are the president of France and the bishop of Urgell in Catalonia, Spain. This unusual arrangement developed from medieval feudal agreements and has continued in modern constitutional form.

Andorra is not part of France or Spain, despite its location between them. Portugal borders Spain but not France, while Monaco borders France but not Spain. Andorra has no airport or railway station within its borders, so road connections through the Pyrenees are especially important for residents and visitors.
