Africa is the only continent crossed by both the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn.
The Equator crosses Africa near its central region, passing through countries including Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia. The Tropic of Capricorn crosses the continent farther south, passing through Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique and Madagascar.
Africa is also crossed by the Tropic of Cancer, making it the only continent crossed by all three major latitude lines: the Equator and both tropics. These lines mark the broad limits of the tropics and relate to the Sun’s overhead position during the year.
South America is crossed by the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn separately, but the two lines do not both pass through the mainland continent in the same way as they do across Africa’s mainland and islands.
