Which is the largest Nordic country by land area?

Sweden is the largest Nordic country by land area. It covers roughly 450,000 square kilometres in total, with a greater land area than Finland, Norway or Denmark.

Sweden occupies most of the eastern side of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Its long north–south shape includes forests, lakes, wetlands, farmland and mountainous terrain near the Norwegian border. Thousands of islands line its Baltic coast, and the Gulf of Bothnia separates Sweden from Finland across much of the northeast.

Norway can seem like the likely answer because it has a larger total coastline and dramatic mountain landscapes. Finland is another common contender because it is also very large and is known as the “land of a thousand lakes.” Both, however, have less land area than Sweden. Denmark is much smaller, although the Kingdom of Denmark includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands; those self-governing territories are not normally included when comparing the Nordic countries themselves.
