Which iron and steel works in Germany, a preserved 19th-century industrial site, is a World Heritage Site?

The story behind the answer

Which iron and steel works in Germany, a preserved 19th-century industrial site, is a World Heritage Site? Völklingen Ironworks is the answer.

Völklingen Ironworks, or Völklinger Hütte, stands in the Saarland near Germany’s border with France. The complex documents the industrial transformation of the 19th and early 20th centuries, when coal, iron ore, coke, blast furnaces, and engineering reshaped European economies. Its equipment illustrates nearly the complete process of producing pig iron, from raw-material handling to furnace operation and gas purification.

The works began in the 1870s and expanded through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Production ended in 1986, but the machinery, platforms, conveyor systems, blowing engines, coking facilities, and blast-furnace structures remained largely intact. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1994, recognizing its technological importance and exceptional authenticity. It is now an industrial monument and cultural venue. A common mix-up is Zollverein Coal Mine, another German industrial World Heritage Site; Zollverein represents coal mining, while Völklingen preserves an integrated ironworks.
