Which Iranian desert is also called the Lut Desert?
Answer
Dasht-e Lut
Answer
Dasht-e Lut
The Iranian desert also called the Lut Desert is Dasht-e Lut.
Dasht-e Lut, commonly known in English as the Lut Desert, stretches across Iran’s Kerman and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces. It is a huge drainage basin about 480 kilometres long and 320 kilometres wide, containing salt flats, sandy areas and wind-sculpted ridges known as kaluts. Seasonal water can briefly flow down from surrounding mountains before evaporating in the intense heat.
The desert became internationally famous after satellite measurements recorded land-surface temperatures as high as 70.7°C in 2005. That figure describes the temperature of the ground, not the air, so it should not be confused with an ordinary weather-station temperature record. The Lut’s stark geological formations and exceptional aridity also make it an important site for scientific and environmental study.
In 2016, UNESCO added the Lut Desert to its World Heritage List for its outstanding natural features. It is often confused with Dasht-e Kavir, Iran’s other major desert, which is generally larger and lies farther north.
