Which iPhone model introduced Touch ID in 2013?

The iPhone 5s introduced Touch ID in 2013. Apple unveiled the phone on September 10, 2013, and released it on September 20 alongside the colorful iPhone 5c. Touch ID was built into a redesigned Home button and could unlock the phone or approve App Store and iTunes purchases with a fingerprint.

The sensor used capacitive imaging to read fingerprint patterns, with a metal detection ring around a scratch-resistant sapphire surface. Fingerprint information was stored locally in the iPhone 5s's Secure Enclave rather than uploaded to iCloud or Apple's servers. The phone's A7 chip handled the security processing.

A common mix-up is the iPhone 5c, which launched at the same time but retained the older Home button and did not include Touch ID. Apple later expanded the feature to iPads and newer iPhones. Touch ID also gained an important additional role when Apple Pay arrived on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in 2014.

Apple had acquired fingerprint-security company AuthenTec in 2012, helping set the stage for the iPhone 5s feature.
