Which investor founded The Vanguard Group in 1975?

The story behind the answer

John C. Bogle founded The Vanguard Group in 1975.

Bogle had previously helped develop the First Index Investment Trust, launched in 1976. The fund later became Vanguard 500 Index Fund, one of the earliest index mutual funds available to individual investors.

His approach emphasized broad diversification, low costs, and long-term investing. Vanguard’s unusual mutual ownership structure, in which the funds own the company, was designed to align the firm’s interests with those of fund investors.

Bogle is often associated with popularizing index investing, but he did not invent the concept of an index fund. Economists and financial researchers had discussed passive investment strategies before Vanguard introduced its first retail index fund. The Vanguard Group became one of the world’s largest investment-management companies.
