Which inventor is widely credited with introducing Europe’s movable-type printing press?

The story behind the answer

Johannes Gutenberg is widely credited with introducing Europe’s movable-type printing press.

Gutenberg developed his printing system in Mainz, in the Holy Roman Empire, during the 15th century. It combined reusable metal type, oil-based ink, a suitable press, and techniques for producing large quantities of consistent letters.

His most famous publication is the Gutenberg Bible, printed around 1455. The work is often regarded as the first major European book produced with movable metal type, although exact surviving copies and production details remain subjects of historical study.

Printing existed earlier in East Asia, including Chinese woodblock printing and movable type. Gutenberg therefore did not invent printing worldwide; his importance lies in making a highly efficient movable-type system that transformed European book production.
