Which international telescope array produced the first image of a black hole in 2019?

The story behind the answer

The Event Horizon Telescope produced the first image of a black hole in 2019.

The Event Horizon Telescope, or EHT, is a global network of radio observatories working together through very-long-baseline interferometry. By combining observations from facilities on different continents, it achieved the resolving power needed to study the region around the supermassive black hole in Messier 87, a galaxy about 55 million light-years away.

The published image showed a bright, uneven ring of glowing gas surrounding a dark central region, often called the black hole’s shadow. The black hole itself cannot be seen directly because light cannot escape from inside its event horizon. The ring is produced by hot gas and strongly bent light near the black hole.

A common mix-up is calling the EHT a single telescope. It is a coordinated array of observatories, including the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile and the South Pole Telescope. The collaboration released the M87 image on 10 April 2019.
