Which Indus Valley site in Haryana is among the largest Harappan sites?

The story behind the answer

Rakhigarhi is one of the largest known Indus Valley sites and lies in Haryana, India.

The settlement developed through pre-Harappan, Early Harappan, and Mature Harappan phases. Archaeological remains include planned streets, drainage, mud-brick structures, craft production, ornaments, tools, storage facilities, and cemeteries. Excavations have identified several mounds, commonly designated RGR-1 onward.

Its reported size is sometimes given as roughly 300–350 hectares, a figure that includes outlying mounds and remains not necessarily occupied as one integrated city at the same time. Earlier estimates for the core urban area were closer to 80–100 hectares. This explains why references may differ when comparing Rakhigarhi with other major sites.

A common mix-up is with Mohenjo-daro, which was long treated as the largest Harappan city. Rakhigarhi’s Haryana location and extensive mound complex are the clues that distinguish it from Rajasthan’s Kalibangan and Gujarat’s Dholavira.
