Gojek was the Indonesian ride-hailing company that merged with Tokopedia to form GoTo in 2021.
Gojek began in Jakarta in 2010 as a call center connecting customers with motorcycle-taxi drivers, then expanded through a mobile app launched in 2015. Its services grew beyond transport to include food delivery, courier services and digital payments.
Tokopedia, founded in 2009, was an Indonesian e-commerce marketplace. The companies announced their merger on May 17, 2021, creating GoTo, a name combining “Gojek” and “Tokopedia” as well as echoing gotong royong, an Indonesian expression for cooperation.
A common mix-up is Grab, another major Southeast Asian ride-hailing company. Grab was not the company that merged with Tokopedia; the merger involved Gojek and created one of Indonesia’s largest technology groups.
