Bihun goreng is the Indonesian fried-noodle dish made with rice vermicelli, vegetables, tofu, and a sweet soy-based sauce.
Bihun means rice vermicelli in Indonesian, while goreng means fried. The noodles are usually stir-fried with garlic, shallot, cabbage, carrots, spring onions, and kecap manis, Indonesia’s thick sweet soy sauce. Tofu, egg, chicken, shrimp, or other proteins may be added.
The dish is common in Indonesian homes, food stalls, and restaurants. It belongs to a broader Southeast Asian family of fried rice-noodle dishes, with local seasoning distinguishing it from Malaysian and Singaporean versions.
Bihun goreng is easy to confuse with mie goreng, but the noodle type differs: bihun uses thin rice vermicelli, whereas mie goreng uses wheat-based yellow noodles. Nasi goreng, meanwhile, is fried rice rather than fried noodles.
