Which index reached its peak in March 2000 before the dot-com crash?

The story behind the answer

The Nasdaq Composite reached its peak in March 2000 before the dot-com crash.

The technology-heavy index closed at 5,048.62 on March 10, 2000, near the end of the dot-com bubble. Investors had driven internet and technology shares to extraordinary valuations, often based more on expected future growth than on current profits. When confidence weakened, technology stocks fell rapidly and the broader bubble deflated.

The Nasdaq Composite eventually lost roughly 78% of its value from its March 2000 peak to its October 2002 low. The decline damaged many technology companies and erased large amounts of paper wealth, although the internet itself continued to expand and later produced highly successful businesses.

The Nasdaq Composite is an index, not a single technology company. It also differs from the Nasdaq-100, which tracks 100 large non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq and is a separate benchmark.
