Which index reached its dot-com bubble peak on March 10, 2000?

The story behind the answer

The Nasdaq Composite reached its dot-com bubble peak on March 10, 2000.

The index closed at 5,048.62, after years of enthusiasm for internet and technology companies. Investors often valued businesses on expected future growth rather than current profits, and many newly listed firms had limited revenue or no established path to earnings.

After the peak, technology shares fell sharply. The Nasdaq declined by roughly 78% from its March 2000 high to its October 2002 low. The collapse wiped out enormous market value and helped produce a recession in the technology sector, although the broader economy was affected less severely than during the 1929 or 2008 crises.

The Nasdaq is an exchange-based market index with a strong concentration in technology companies, not a single technology stock. The dot-com crash also involved broader indices, but the Nasdaq became its clearest measurement.
