Which index fell from about 5,048 to roughly 1,114 during the dot-com crash?

The story behind the answer

The Nasdaq Composite fell from about 5,048 to roughly 1,114 during the dot-com crash.

The index reached an intraday peak of 5,132.52 on March 10, 2000, near the end of the dot-com bubble. After speculative technology shares lost favor, the Nasdaq declined for more than two years and reached an intraday low of 1,108.49 on October 10, 2002. Its loss from peak to trough was approximately 78%.

The bubble had been fueled by enthusiasm for internet companies, rapid venture investment, and the belief that traditional valuation measures no longer mattered. Many firms had little revenue or no profits, yet their shares rose dramatically.

The Nasdaq Composite is broader than the Nasdaq-100 because it includes thousands of companies listed on Nasdaq. The crash therefore affected a large technology-heavy market, although the wider economy experienced a milder downturn than the Great Depression.
