Answer
Gottfried Heinrich zu Pappenheim
Which imperial general was killed at the Battle of Lützen? Gottfried Heinrich zu Pappenheim was fatally wounded at Lützen and died soon afterward.
The battle took place on 16 November 1632 during the Thirty Years’ War. Pappenheim commanded Imperial cavalry under Albrecht von Wallenstein and arrived with reinforcements after a forced march. He immediately launched attacks against Swedish forces, temporarily relieving pressure on the Imperial army.
Pappenheim was struck by several bullets, including a fatal wound, while directing the fighting. He was carried from the battlefield in a coach and died shortly afterward. His death came on the same day that Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus was killed in the battle.
Wallenstein survived Lützen, although the Imperial army eventually withdrew. Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly, had been a leading Imperial commander earlier in the war but had died at Rain in 1632. Albrecht von Wallenstein was not killed at Lützen; he was assassinated in Eger in 1634.
