Pauline Baynes drew the original illustrations for all seven Narnia books.

Baynes illustrated C. S. Lewis’s complete Chronicles of Narnia, beginning with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950 and continuing through The Last Battle in 1956. Her black-and-white drawings, covers, maps, and other artwork became closely associated with the series and helped establish the visual identity many readers imagine when they think of Narnia.

Lewis selected Baynes after seeing her work on Farmer Giles of Ham, a Tolkien book. She signed with the publisher Geoffrey Bles in 1949, produced the artwork for the first Narnia volume, and then illustrated its six sequels at Lewis’s request. She later created revised covers, coloured work, and Narnia-related artwork for new editions.

A frequent mix-up is E. H. Shepard, who illustrated A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh books, and Quentin Blake, who is strongly associated with Roald Dahl. Arthur Rackham was an earlier fantasy illustrator. Baynes also illustrated Tolkien-related works, but her enduring nickname was the “Narnia artist.”
