Which iconic sign is located on Mount Lee in Los Angeles?

The story behind the answer

The Hollywood Sign is the iconic sign located on Mount Lee in Los Angeles.

It stands on the southern slope of Mount Lee in Griffith Park, above Beachwood Canyon in the Hollywood Hills. The sign was erected in 1923 to advertise a real-estate development called Hollywoodland. Its original purpose was commercial rather than cinematic, but the sign soon became associated with Los Angeles’s film industry and the broader idea of Hollywood.

The original sign spelled out “Hollywoodland” in large wooden letters. In 1949, the final four letters were removed, leaving the shorter name used today. After decades of weather damage and neglect, the structure was rebuilt in 1978 with steel letters. Each letter is about 45 feet tall, and the full sign stretches roughly 450 feet across the hillside.

The sign is not located in the Hollywood neighborhood itself, nor is it a studio logo. Access to the letters is restricted because the terrain is steep and the site is protected by security systems. Mount Lee’s name honors broadcaster Don Lee, whose television facilities once occupied the summit area.
