Which IBM AI system won the televised Jeopardy! match against Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter in 2011?

The story behind the answer

IBM Watson won the televised Jeopardy! match against Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter in 2011.

Watson was an IBM question-answering system built to compete on Jeopardy!, a quiz show known for clues, wordplay, broad knowledge, and its distinctive answer-and-question format. The system combined natural-language processing, information retrieval, machine learning, and many sources of structured and unstructured data.

The exhibition match was broadcast over three days in February 2011. Watson finished first, with Brad Rutter second and Ken Jennings third. Jennings famously wrote “I for one welcome our new computer overlords” in his final response. Watson’s success was not the same as human understanding: it depended on large-scale computation and ranked candidate answers by confidence. The project nevertheless demonstrated how specialized systems could combine language analysis and evidence retrieval for difficult factual questions.
