Sophia became the first robot to receive citizenship when Saudi Arabia recognized it in 2017.
Hanson Robotics developed Sophia, which was activated in 2016 and designed to imitate human expressions, conversation, and social interaction. The company presented her publicly as a social humanoid robot rather than as a general-purpose autonomous machine.
Saudi Arabia granted Sophia citizenship during the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh on 25 October 2017. The announcement attracted worldwide attention because citizenship is normally a legal status associated with human beings. Reports did not clearly specify the practical rights or obligations attached to Sophia’s status.
Sophia is often confused with ASIMO, Pepper, and other humanoid robots. ASIMO was developed by Honda, while Pepper was created by SoftBank Robotics. Sophia’s fame comes especially from her public appearances and the citizenship announcement, not from outperforming humans across general intelligence tasks.
