Which Honda touring motorcycle was introduced at the Cologne Motorcycle Show in 1974?
Answer
Honda Gold Wing
Answer
Honda Gold Wing
The Honda touring motorcycle introduced at the Cologne Motorcycle Show in 1974 was the Honda Gold Wing.
Honda unveiled the original GL1000 Gold Wing to the public in October 1974 at the IFMA motorcycle exhibition in Cologne, Germany, now associated with Intermot. It had already been shown to Honda dealers at the company’s annual U.S. dealer meeting in Las Vegas the previous month. The motorcycle went on sale in the United States and Europe in 1975.
The first Gold Wing was not yet the fully dressed touring machine many riders recognize today. It used a liquid-cooled, horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, shaft drive, and a relatively stripped-down layout. Owners and aftermarket companies soon added luggage, fairings, and passenger equipment, encouraging Honda to develop increasingly touring-focused versions.
The Pacific Coast, Shadow, and Valkyrie are genuine Honda motorcycles, but they belong to different product lines. The Valkyrie, for example, later used a Gold Wing-derived six-cylinder engine, making it related to the touring flagship without being the answer to this question.
