Which Honda minivan is sold in North America as the Odyssey?

The story behind the answer

The Honda Odyssey is the Honda minivan sold in North America under the Odyssey name.

Honda introduced the first North American Odyssey in 1994 as a 1995 model. It was based on the Accord platform and designed during Japan’s economic downturn, when Honda needed a practical minivan that could be built with limited factory changes. Its fold-away third-row seat and car-like driving manners helped distinguish it from larger traditional minivans.

The name can cause confusion because Honda sells two distinct vehicles called Odyssey. The international Odyssey began as a smaller Japanese-market minivan, while the North American version evolved into a larger vehicle with sliding doors and a different design. Japan also sold the North American model under the name LaGreat for a time.

The North American Odyssey has been built primarily in Alabama since the late 1990s. It remains a family-focused minivan with three rows of seating, rather than an SUV such as the Pilot or Passport.
