The Sorting Hat places Harry in Gryffindor during the welcoming feast in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are sorted into the same house, forming the central trio of the series.
Gryffindor is one of Hogwarts’ four houses and is associated with bravery, courage, nerve, and chivalry. Its emblematic animal is the lion, and its traditional colors are scarlet and gold. The house was founded by Godric Gryffindor.
Harry’s choice matters as well as the Hat’s judgment. Before the sorting, he strongly hopes not to be placed in Slytherin. The story repeatedly emphasizes that personal choices help define identity, rather than ancestry or innate reputation alone.
