Which Hogwarts house does J.K. Rowling say she would belong to?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling says she would belong to Gryffindor. In the Harry Potter stories, Gryffindor is one of Hogwarts’ four houses and is associated with courage, daring, nerve, and chivalry.

The house was founded by Godric Gryffindor, one of the four medieval founders of Hogwarts. Its emblematic animal is the lion, and its traditional colors are scarlet and gold. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger are among its best-known members.

Rowling’s self-identification with Gryffindor is an authorial preference rather than a fictional Sorting ceremony shown in the novels. The books’ Sorting Hat places students according to a mixture of qualities, potential, and personal choice, so house membership is not simply a school-grade classification.

Readers sometimes assume that Rowling must belong to Ravenclaw because she is a writer. Ravenclaw is associated with learning and wit, but Rowling has repeatedly identified herself with Gryffindor in public discussions of the houses.
