Pippin Took looks into Saruman's palantír after the Battle of Helm's Deep.

After the Ents destroy much of Isengard, Gandalf, Aragorn, Théoden, and the hobbits confront Saruman at Orthanc. Gríma Wormtongue throws the wizard's seeing-stone from the tower, and Pippin is the one who first picks it up. Later, while Gandalf sleeps, Pippin's curiosity leads him to steal the palantír and look into it.

The stone connects him with Sauron, whose influence overwhelms the inexperienced hobbit. Sauron sees Pippin but mistakenly assumes that the hobbit is being held by Saruman and that the One Ring may be nearby. Gandalf quickly takes Pippin toward Minas Tirith, both to protect him and to exploit Sauron's misunderstanding.

The scene is often confused with the films, where the timing and staging are compressed. In Tolkien's story, Pippin's act occurs after Helm's Deep during the journey away from Isengard. Aragorn later uses the same palantír deliberately, challenging Sauron rather than accidentally exposing himself.
