Which Hesiod poem gives the longer version of Pandora’s jar story?

The story behind the answer

Works and Days gives the longer version of Pandora’s jar story.

Hesiod’s Works and Days is a didactic Greek poem combining advice about farming, justice, labor, and proper conduct with mythic explanations of the human condition. Its Pandora episode appears in the section explaining why suffering and hard work entered human life.

The poem describes Zeus’s response to Prometheus’s theft of fire and names the gods who contribute to Pandora’s creation. It also tells how Pandora opens the storage vessel and leaves hope inside. Theogony, another poem attributed to Hesiod, mentions Pandora and the troubles connected with her, but its treatment is shorter.

Works and Days is therefore the best primary literary source for the familiar sequence of events. Later authors, translators, artists, and modern popular culture expanded or altered the story, especially by turning the original pithos into a box.
